about

From Seth:
i found that writing the music for this song (finding the rhythm and melody) was fairly difficult. i wasn't familiar with the original hymn, and didn't want to listen to it before i tried my hand at it, but the rhythm of the words, as well as the rhyme scheme, were hard to wrap my head around. it took picking up an equally unfamiliar instrument (in this case a lap dulcimer) before i could start to make sense of it. after that, the structure started to fall into place.

there's an almost magical, pagan quality to the lyrics - the trees ministering to jesus in the garden, the leaves being kind to him and the thorns making sure not to scratch him. it's also very ominous. jesus comes into the garden, heavy with "love and shame," the trees take care of him, and when he gets to the point of being "content with death and shame," he is drawn out to be tortured and murdered. it feels gritty and spooky and human, while also suggesting a fairly non-christian attitude towards christ and nature.

lyrics

Into the woods my Master went,
Clean forspent, forspent,
Into the woods my Master came,
Forspent with love and shame.
But the olives they were not blind to Him.
The little grey leaves were kind to Him,
The thorn tree had a mind to Him,
When into the woods He came.

Out of the woods my Master came
And he was well content
Out of the woods my Master came,
Content with death and shame
When death and shame would woo Him last,
From under the trees they drew Him last,
’Twas on a tree they slew Him last
When out of the woods He came
